Kelsey’s Muscular Dystrophy

Kelsey Grover-Murray was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in the fall of 2015 at the age of 16. She received a full diagnosis later that year of Limb-Girdle muscular dystrophy, a type of muscular dystrophy characterized by the gradual loss of muscle bulk and strength in the arms and legs.

New challenges to face

Kelsey began having difficulty walking long distances and climbing stairs. Walking became a more complicated task requiring careful coordination of the muscles involved to avoid falling. As time went on, Kelsey lost confidence in her ability to walk. A highly involved member of her local 4H club, Kelsey began to find the things she loved more difficult to do, including raising and caring for her rabbits.  At 18-years-old and approaching her high school graduation, Kelsey was determined to walk across the stage and accept her diploma with confidence.

Putting a spring (or two) in her step

Kelsey’s father discovered the Levitation™ bionic knee brace on social media and was eager to see if it could help. Fortunate to be living locally, Kelsey and her father came into the Spring Loaded office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, to try on a pair of braces. The potential this technology had to change Kelsey’s life was realized immediately.

After walking the length of the office a couple times, Kelsey noticed that she no longer had to lock her left leg to avoid collapse. She then took on a tall set of stairs, adjusting her technique to leverage the brace’s bionic hinge. Kelsey had to have the braces.

Since going bionic, Kelsey has noticed an improvement in her ability to walk long distances and take longer strides without a fear of falling. She climbs stairs with unparalleled confidence. Kelsey tells us she now has the energy at the end of the day to care for her show rabbits and do the things she loves around her grandma’s farm, but best of all, her confidence has been restored.
